New Delhi, Mar 23: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday termed the prevailing situation in West Asia as “worrisome”, saying it is adversely affecting the global economy and people’s livelihoods.

Making a statement in the Lok Sabha, Modi said the ongoing crisis, which has continued for over three weeks, has posed significant economic and humanitarian challenges.

He said ensuring the safety of Indians in the region remains the government’s top priority, adding that the Centre is vigilant and ready to extend all necessary assistance.

The prime minister noted that disruptions in cargo movement through the Strait of Hormuz have posed challenges, but efforts are being made to keep fuel and gas supplies stable.

Highlighting India’s dependence on imports, he said around 60 per cent of LPG requirements are met through imports, prompting the government to prioritise domestic supply and increase production.

Modi said the conflict has created economic, humanitarian and national security concerns, especially as the region is crucial for India’s energy needs and hosts nearly one crore Indians.

He added that he has spoken with several leaders in West Asia, who assured the safety of Indian nationals, though some casualties have been reported and assistance is being extended to affected families.

Calling for unity, Modi said Parliament should send a collective message urging an early resolution of the crisis. (Agencies)
