Two-Year Central Deputation Mandatory for IPS IG Empanelment: Govt

New Delhi, Jan 31: The government has made a minimum of two years’ central deputation mandatory for Indian Police Service (IPS) officers of the 2011 batch and onwards to be empanelled as Inspector General (IG) at the Centre, according to an official order.

The order stipulates that officers must have served for at least two years at the Superintendent of Police (SP) or Deputy Inspector General (DIG), or equivalent level, on central deputation to qualify for empanelment at the IG or equivalent level.

The move is aimed at ensuring that senior IPS officers gain adequate ground-level experience while serving at the Centre, officials familiar with the development said.

In its order, the ministry stated, “A minimum of two years of central experience at SP/DIG or equivalent level shall be mandatory for empanelment of IPS officers at IG or equivalent level at the Centre from the 2011 batch onwards.”

While a similar requirement has long been in place for Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers deputed to the Centre, there was no such mandatory condition earlier for IPS officers posted to Central Armed Police Forces or other IG-level positions at the Centre. (Agencies)
