New Delhi, Mar 13: Opposition MPs have submitted notices in both Houses of Parliament seeking a motion for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, sources said on Friday.

According to sources, 130 MPs in the Lok Sabha and 63 in the Rajya Sabha have signed the notice demanding action against the CEC.

The signatories include members of parties belonging to the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc. The Aam Aadmi Party has also backed the move despite no longer being formally part of the alliance, the sources said.

Some Independent MPs have also signed the notice, while several others have reportedly shown interest in supporting the initiative.

Sources said this is the first time a notice has been moved seeking the removal of a Chief Election Commissioner.

The notice reportedly lists seven charges against Kumar, including alleged partisan and discriminatory conduct in office, deliberate obstruction of investigations into electoral fraud, and mass disenfranchisement.

Opposition parties have accused the CEC of favouring the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, particularly in connection with the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, which they allege could benefit the party at the Centre. (Agencies)
