At Least 23 Killed, 11 Injured in Mexico Supermarket Explosion
by Northlines · NorthlinesHermosillo (Mexico), Nov 2: At least 23 people, including several children, were killed and 11 others injured after a powerful explosion ripped through a supermarket in northern Mexico’s Sonora state on Saturday, officials said.
The injured were rushed to hospitals in Hermosillo, where the blast occurred, as rescue teams searched the debris for survivors.
Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo said in a video statement that “a number of the victims we’ve found were minors” and ordered a “thorough and transparent investigation” to determine the cause of the explosion and identify those responsible.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed condolences to the families of the victims on social media platform X, saying she had spoken to Governor Durazo and directed Interior Secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez to dispatch a support team to assist the affected families and coordinate relief efforts.
State Attorney General Gustavo Salas said preliminary findings from the forensic medical service indicated that many deaths were caused by the inhalation of toxic gases.
While authorities have not yet confirmed the cause, some local media reports have suggested that an electrical failure may have triggered the deadly explosion.
The tragedy has shocked the region, prompting widespread calls for accountability and stronger safety measures in public facilities. (Agencies)
