Both houses of Parliament adjourned for the day over Adani row
by Northlines · NorthlinesNew Delhi, Nov 28: Proceedings in both the houses of Parliament were adjourned for the day on Thursday, amid protest by the Opposition over alleged bribery charges against Adani group and Sambhal violence.
As soon as the Rajya Sabha met for the day, members of Congress and other Opposition parties demanded a discussion under Rule 267 on the issue related to the alleged corruption and irregularities of industrialist Gautam Adani Group, due to which the proceedings of the Rajya Sabha had to be adjourned till 12 noon.
Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar said that he had already clarified the situation regarding Rule 267 several times. As these notices did not fit for discussion under Rule 267 hence they cannot be taken up.
When the uproar continued, the Chairman adjourned the House till 12 noon.
When the upper house re-assembled again, the Opposition again raised the Adani issue forcing the chair to adjourn the house for the day.
Meanwhile, Lok Sabha also witnessed a similar scene forcing the two adjournments one till 12 noon and then for the day.
When the Lower House assembled for the day, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra took oath as Wayanad MP. Moreover, Ravindra Chavan from the Congress who won the Lok Sabha by-election from Nanded in Maharashtra also took oath.
But soon after the oath taking, Opposition raising slogans demanded discussion on Adani issue and Sambhal violence.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla while asking the agitating members to maintain order said, “You all have been elected by the people and they are waiting eagerly to see you raise their issues. But you are creating ruckus in the House”.
But the Opposition members continued with their uproar and the Speaker adjourned the House till 12 noon.
As soon as the House reassembled at 12, members of the Congress, Trinamool Congress, and Samajwadi Party stood up, demanding discussions on the Adani and Sambhal issue. Agitated Samajwadi Party members entered the well of the House, raising slogans “Sambhal ke Hathyaroon ko Phansi do” (Hang the murderers of Sambhal).
Meanwhile, Presiding Officer Krishna Prasad Tenneti urged the members to go back to their seats and cooperate in the functioning of the House. But the sloganeering of members continued creating a ruckus.
Amid the sloganeering by the Opposition, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju while condemning the act, said, “During the all-party meeting ahead of the winter session, all leaders had decided that every day of the session will be fully utilised. They had raised some issues, and we had accepted it. I condemn the disruption of the House by the Congress and other parties by breaking the rule.
The government has also accepted the Opposition’s demand to extend the time for the Joint Parliamentary Committee formed on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 to submit its report.
Despite this, Congress members and Opposition parties are disrupting the functioning of the House by creating a ruckus, which is not appropriate.” The Opposition continued with the ruckus, forcing the chair to adjourn the House till 11 am on Friday.
