Nepal Flash Flood Death Toll Climbs To 1,344

Kathmandu, Sep 5: The death toll from devastating flash floods in Nepal rose to 1,344 on Saturday as rescue teams recovered more bodies from flood-hit areas, while 4,898 people remain missing, according to Nepal Police.

Data released by Nepal Police showed that 843 bodies had been successfully recovered, including 758 adults and 85 children. Authorities also reported recovering 501 amputated bodies, taking the total number of recovered remains to 1,344.

The flash floods, triggered by an ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26, caused widespread destruction across towns and villages in northern and central Nepal.

Rescue and search operations continued for the 11th consecutive day under the leadership of the Nepal Army, with joint teams working across affected areas to locate missing people and recover bodies.

Authorities have so far managed 1,030 bodies by temporarily burying them underground in accordance with specified procedures, including DNA collection, as efforts continue to identify victims.

The scale of the disaster has left large areas devastated, with thousands of families affected and rescue agencies continuing operations amid challenging conditions.

The Nepal Police said the death toll increased as additional bodies and remains were recovered from the affected areas. (Agencies)
