J&K Govt Launches “CM’s Scheme For Heritage Courses” To Revive Traditional Crafts
by Northlines · NorthlinesJammu, November 6: In a major step toward safeguarding Jammu and Kashmir’s cultural legacy, the Government has approved the “Chief Minister’s Scheme for Introduction of Heritage Courses” under the Skill Development Department, aimed at reviving traditional crafts and promoting skill-based livelihoods.
According to the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s office, seven traditional craft courses will be reintroduced across 25 training units in Government ITIs and Polytechnics, with a total intake capacity of 500 students.
The initiative seeks to ensure that J&K’s age-old art forms — including wood carving, papier-mâché, shawl weaving, and other heritage crafts — are preserved while being transformed into sustainable employment opportunities for the youth.
Under the scheme, trainees will receive monthly stipends, and instructors will be paid honorariums to encourage participation and maintain high-quality training standards.
Officials said the move reflects the Government’s commitment to reviving traditional skills through modern vocational education, ensuring that the region’s rich artistic traditions continue to thrive for generations to come. (KINS)
