AMRITSAR, Dec 4:  A man attempted to shoot Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Sukhbir Singh Badal outside the Golden Temple on Wednesday, but missed the target after being overpowered by bystanders. The incident occurred while Badal, seated in a wheelchair due to a leg injury, was performing a religious penance for “mistakes” made during his party’s tenure in Punjab from 2007 to 2017.

The shooter, identified as Narain Singh from Dera Baba Nanak, approached Badal and pulled out a gun. However, a man standing near Badal quickly intervened, preventing the attack. During the struggle, a bullet struck the wall behind Badal, but he was unharmed.

The assailant was immediately detained by security personnel and handed over to the police. The audacious attempt was captured by media cameras, as reporters were present to cover Badal’s penance, which was being conducted with a small board around his neck acknowledging his “misdeeds.”

SAD leader Daljit Singh Cheema condemned the attack, calling it an act of violence. Police are investigating the motive behind the attack.
