War: Trump announces new development on Strait of Hormuz
by John Owen Nwachukwu · Daily PostThe President of the United States, Donald Trump, has declared that the US will “guide” vessels stranded due to the Iran conflict out of the Gulf via the Strait of Hormuz on Monday morning, asserting that his representatives are engaged in “very positive” discussions with Iran.
Trump posted on his social media platform that the initiative, termed “Project Freedom”, is intended as a humanitarian act “on behalf of the United States, Middle Eastern nations, and particularly, the nation of Iran”.
“I have instructed my representatives to notify them that we will exert our utmost efforts to ensure the safe passage of their ships and crews out of the Strait. In all instances, they indicated they would not return until the region is deemed safe for navigation, along with all other considerations,” he said.
The president did not provide specifics on how the over 850 ships trapped in the Gulf would be released, and the Wall Street Journal referenced a US official stating that the plan does not presently include US Navy warships escorting vessels through the strait. Instead, it is expected to be a process allowing shipping stakeholders to coordinate traffic through the strait.
Following Trump’s announcement, a senior Iranian official cautioned that any US interference in the Strait of Hormuz would be regarded as a violation of the ceasefire by Tehran.
Iran established a blockade on foreign shipping utilizing the Hormuz strait shortly after the conflict commenced with a US-Israeli strike on February 28. Trump enacted a counter-blockade on vessels using Iranian ports on April 13.
The US Central Command stated that “Project Freedom” aims to assist “merchant vessels seeking to navigate freely through this vital international trade corridor” and will be supported by “guided-missile destroyers, over 100 land and sea-based aircraft, multi-domain unmanned platforms, and 15,000 service members”.
Trump’s announcement on Sunday occurred nearly three days following the introduction of a 14-point peace plan by Iran, which reportedly emphasized an initial agreement to open the Strait of Hormuz. On the same day, Iran’s foreign ministry declared that it had received a response from Washington and would review it.
It remained unclear on Sunday evening how the Iranian proposal and Trump’s announcement were directly connected; however, the president stated in his social media update: “I am fully aware that my Representatives are having very positive discussions with the Country of Iran, and that these discussions could lead to something very positive for all.”
Nevertheless, Trump cautioned: “If, in any way, this humanitarian process is interfered with, that interference will, unfortunately, have to be dealt with forcefully.”
Up until Sunday night, communications between the US and Iran had been facilitated by Pakistan, with no reported direct interactions between the conflicting parties.
