2027: How Atiku asked me to make Peter Obi his running mate – Babachir Lawal

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Babachir Lawal, has revealed that former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, asked him to persuade Peter Obi to join the African Democratic Congress, ADC, and serve as his running mate in the 2027 presidential election.

Lawal made this disclosure during an interview on Diaspora Digital Media.

He was speaking on the events surrounding the opposition coalition and the eventual break-up between the Atiku and Obi camps.

The ex-SGF stated that Atiku proposed that Obi should accept the vice-presidential slot on the ADC platform, with a broader political arrangement that would involve constitutional changes.

According to him, the plan was for Atiku and Obi to serve together for four years, during which they would amend the Constitution to create a single six-year presidential term, which Obi would subsequently benefit from.

He said he presented the proposal to Obi, but that the former Anambra State governor declined.

Recall that Lawal resigned from the ADC in June 2026 after accusing the party of manipulating its presidential primary in favour of Atiku. Atiku’s camp rejected Lawal’s allegations.

DAILY POST reports that Lawal recently joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, and endorsed the Obi–Rabiu Kwankwaso presidential ticket.
