Garda hospitalised after being stabbed with broken bottle in Dublin city centre this afternoon

A GARDA HAS been assaulted in Dublin following a public order incident on Abbey Street in the city centre.

The incident took place this afternoon, shortly after 1pm. One member of An Garda Síochána received injuries to his arm, believed to be non-life-threatening at this time.

He was taken to the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital for treatment. It is understood the garda was cut during the incident.

A second garda was also injured, the President of the Garda Representative Association (GRA) said.

The two injured gardaí are members of Operation Citizen, a proactive patrol in the city centre. The Journal understands that the gardaí had approached two people they suspected of being involved in a burglary. 

Upon approaching the two, the garda hospitalised was stabbed repeatedly with a broken bottle by the suspect.

Sections of Old Abbey Street to Marlborough Street have been sealed by gardaí, near the back of the Abbey Theatre. The area sealed off is close to O’Connell Street, Dublin’s main thoroughfare.

A man, aged in his late 30s, was arrested by gardaí at the scene. He is currently detained at a garda station in the Dublin city centre.

Garda welfare services will be put in place for the Garda member.

President of the GRA, Mark O’Meara, said that the injuries suffered by the Garda is a “stark reminder” of the dangers that members of An Garda Síochána face on a daily basis.

“I would just like to wish our injured colleague a speedy recovery in what was an extremely difficult situation,” O’Meara said.

“Another member also received injuries in the incident and our thoughts are with them both and their families.

“While it can be rewarding, a career in policing can be an extremely dangerous one and there is never a reason or excuse for attacks and assaults on our members. I commend these colleagues on their bravery and actions today and also any members who find themselves in harms way while policing the frontline.”

Investigations are ongoing at this time.
