Six-year-old girl who was cycling her bike dies in incident involving a truck in Galway city

A SIX-YEAR-old girl who was cycling her bike died yesterday afternoon in a collision involving a heavy goods vehicle in Galway city.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following the collision that occurred at Headford Road at approximately 12.05pm on Saturday.

The collision involved the young girl and a heavy goods vehicle at the junction of Headford Road and Sandyvale Lawn.

In a statement, gardaí said the child was fatally injured as a result of the collision. Her body was removed from the scene to University Hospital Galway and a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

Gardaí said the male driver of the truck, aged in his 30s was uninjured.

The road was closed and a technical examination of the scene by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators has taken place. The road has since reopened.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

Gardaí are also appealing for any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) who were travelling in the area between 11:45am and 12:15pm today to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.
