Canada becomes the latest country to pledge to recognise State of Palestine
by Lauren Boland, https://www.thejournal.ie/author/lauren-boland/ · TheJournal.ieCANADA HAS JOINED the growing list of countries that have pledged in recent days to formally recognise a Palestinian state.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced this evening that the country will recognise the State of Palestine at UN General Assembly in September.
“Canada intends to recognize the State of Palestine at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025,” Carney said, citing “intolerable” suffering in Gaza.
Both the UK and France have already announced similar moves in the last week as international pressure on Israel mounts whilst the number of adults and children in Gaza dying of starvation rapidly rises.
The Irish Medical Organisation (IMO) said today that is “gravely concerned with the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe” in Gaza as civilians, particularly children, face extreme levels of starvation, displacement, and violence.
“The situation is intolerable and cannot be alleviated without urgent international action,” the IMO said.
At least 48 Palestinians were killed and dozens were wounded today while waiting for food at the main entry point for aid into northern Gaza.
Earlier, Israeli strikes and gunfire killed at least 46 Palestinians overnight and into this morning.

Israel’s brutal bombardment of Gaza over the past 21 months has stirred up support from abroad for Palestine, including multiple countries deciding to formally recognise a Palestinian state.
The Irish government officially recognised the State of Palestine last year, a move which then-Taoiseach Simon Harris said was a “historic day” but one which took place “in the most sombre of circumstances as we witness the humanitarian catastrophe unfold in Gaza and Rafah”.
Ireland is among a group of countries this week urging others around the world to recognise Palestine, as well as calling for ceasefire.
The joint statement of foreign ministers was agreed at a High-level International Conference which took place in New York this week.
Tánaiste and Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Harris said the effort “demonstrated there is another way forward”.
“The international community demands an immediate ceasefire and hostage release deal and urgent humanitarian aid for Gaza, and is ready to take concrete steps to implement the two-State solution.”
