AT LEAST ONE person has been killed and several have been injured after a car rammed into people in the east German city of Leipzig.

The mayor of the city, Burkhard Jung, told media that two people were confirmed dead following the incident, however the state broadcaster, MDR, reported that police had revised the death toll down to one.

“We still don’t really know the motivation. We don’t know anything about the perpetrator,” Jung said.

Local fire chief Axel Schuh said that roughly 40 firefighters and 40 paramedics are on the scene.

The incident happened in the city centre.

Police have said that the driver of the vehicle has been arrested.

“A car hit several people on Grimmaische street and fled the scene,” police said in a post on X. “The driver has been arrested and no longer poses any danger.”

Germany has faced a string of car-ramming attacks in recent years.

In December 2024, at least six people were killed and hundreds wounded in a car-ramming attack on the Christmas market in the eastern city of Magdeburg.

There have also been similar attacks in Munich and Berlin.
