Coimbatore Councillor M. Krishnamoorthy, 62, who was found dead under a bridge across river Noyyal at Pattanam near Ondipudur on Wednesday night, died of injuries sustained in a fall from a bridge across the Noyyal River according to the preliminary findings of the post-mortem, said police on Thursday.

The post-mortem, performed at the Government Medical College and ESI Hospital on Thursday, identified a severe neck injury from the fall as the cause of death, said a police officer. The body was handed over to the councillor’s family after post-mortem, the officer added.

According to the police, Krishnamoorthy, a Congress councillor representing Ward 56, reportedly stopped his car near the bridge around 9 p.m. on Wednesday to attend to nature’s call. While standing on the edge, he stepped on a discarded plastic food parcel cover and slipped, police said.

Despite being taken to a private hospital, he was declared dead on arrival, the police said.

The Sulur police have registered a case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita for unnatural death. Deputy Superintendent of Police P. Thangaraman of the Karumathampatty subdivision and Sulur station inspector Lenin Appadurai inspected the site of the fall on Thursday.
