by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduSeemanth Kumar Singh, a 1996 batch IPS officer, presently posted as Additional Director-General of Police, Bengaluru Metropolitan Task Force, has been posted as the 39th Bengaluru City Police Commissioner late on Thursday night.
The order came hours after the suspension of B. Dayananda, who had a two-year-tenure as Commissioner.
Who is Seemanth Kumar Singh?
Seemanth Kumar Singh is most notably known for serving as Commissioner of Mangaluru City from 2010 to September 2012 and as SP of Dakshina Kannada from 2000 to 2004.
Mr. Singh was also the Superintendent of Police in Ballari in 2010, at a time when illegal mining was at its peak in the district.
His name figured in a list of officers against whom a CBI inquiry was ordered by the Karnataka High Court for not serving summons and arrest warrants to mining baron G Janardhana Reddy.
Mr. Singh has served as IGP and Commander, Anti-Naxal Force (ANF), Udupi.
He has also served as Inspector General of Police (Western Range), and as the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) of the erstwhile Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB).
He was in the news in 2021 for his humanitarian efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic, during which he reportedly provided around 100 oxygen concentrators with the help of his friends to taluk and village hospitals in 17 districts of Karnataka.
Mr. Singh was awarded the President’s Medal in 2014 for Distinguished Service.
Additional charge
After appointing new city police commissioner, the Karnataka Home Department has given additional charge to the Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) to head the West Division. The order issued by Additional Director General of Police (Administration), on behalf of the DG&IGP, has also asked Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) to hold additional charge of DCP Central Division following the suspension order.
