Distribution of Pongal gift hamper commences in districts

District Collector K. P. Karthikeyan formally inaugurated the distribution of Pongal gift hampers to cardholders in Palayamkottai on Thursday.

After inaugurating the distribution of Pongal gifts – 1 Kg raw rice, 1 Kg sugar and a sugarcane - worth about ₹81, at a ration shop at Maharaja Nagar, Dr. Karthikeyan said 801 ration shops - 700 cooperative society ration shops, 97 ration shops of Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation and four ration shops of women self-help groups – will distribute the Pongal gift hampers to 4,94,167 cardholders.

Apart from this, free saris and dhotis are also being given to eligible cardholders.

To ensure smooth distribution of this gift for celebrating the first day of ‘Thai’, tokens have been distributed to the cardholders.

“While 100 token-holders will receive the gift on day one, this number will be increased up to 200 from second day onwards,” Dr. Karthikeyan said.

Joint Registrar of Cooperative Societies P. M. Murugesan was present.

In Tenkasi district, Collector A. K. Kamal Kishore inaugurated the distribution of Pongal gift hampers at the cooperative society ration shop at Tenkasi Housing Board Colony in the presence of MP Rani Srikumar.

A total of 4,74,710 cardholders will receive the gift through 658 ration shops, Mr. Kamal Kishore said.
