SC declines plea seeking regulations on quality of prasadam distributed in temples
Bench says the issue came within the policy of the State and the court does not want to intervene
by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduThe Supreme Court on Friday (November 29, 2024) declined to entertain a petition seeking regulations to be put in place over the quality of prasadam distributed in temples.
A Bench of Justices B.R. Gavai and K.V. Viswanathan said the issue came within the policy of the State and the court did not want to intervene.
“But why only restrict to prasadam? File it for food in hotels, food items that we purchase from the grocery [stores]. There may also be adulteration there,” the Bench remarked.
The petitioner’s counsel said it was not the case of temples being at fault as they lacked the wherewithal to check the quality of supplies.
He said though the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India had powers, its guidelines lacked teeth.
The Bench, however, observed that grievances about prasadam served in any temple could be addressed by the State High Court concerned.
