An undertrial was allegedly beaten to death by two of his fellow inmates from Tihar jail inside a lock-up of Saket court on Thursday, said the police.

According to the police, the undertrial, Aman, 24, an accused in an attempt to murder case, was brought to the Saket court for a hearing and lodged in the court’s lock-up when undertrials – Jitender and Jaidev – started kicking him and smashed his head against the lock-up’s wall in the presence of other inmates.

Receiving a critical head injury, Aman was first rushed to the court’s dispensary and then to the trauma centre of AIIMS but pronounced dead, said Sumit Kumar Jha, the Additional District Commissioner of Police (South).

Mr. Jha said Aman and the other two undertrials had a verbal spat earlier in the day while boarding the Delhi police bus from Tihar Jail for Saket court.

Ankit Chauhan, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (South), told The Hindu that Aman and one of the undertrials, Jitender, had a history of animosity. “In 2024, Aman had allegedly assaulted Jitender and his brother with a knife,” said Mr. Chauhan.

“The court’s security personnel are being over how the assault took place in their presence,” he said, adding that investigation was under way.
