Tragedy as woman dies after being pulled from canal

A huge emergency services presence descended on Wool Road in the Dobcross area last night (Monday, November 18) over 'reports of concern for the welfare of a woman' in the water at the Huddersfield Narrow Canal. Police officers, firefighters and paramedics responded.
Eyewitnesses also reported seeing an air ambulance land nearby. Sadly, despite the best efforts of the emergency services, the woman was pronounced dead after being pulled from the water.

No further details about her have been released at this stage. A police scene remains in place near the Limekiln Cafe as investigations are carried out, with members of the public urged to avoid the area.
In a statement issued this morning, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "At 7pm last night (Monday 18 November) we were called to reports of concern for welfare of a woman in the canal on Wool Road, Dobcross. Emergency services attended, and sadly, despite the best efforts of those at the scene, she was pronounced deceased.
"A scene remains in place whilst we conduct enquiries, and we advise members of the public to avoid the area.”
Last night, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At around 7.05pm this evening (Monday 18 November), two fire engines from Oldham and Stalybridge fire stations were called to an incident on Wool Road, Oldham.
“Crews quickly arrived at the scene and liaised with Greater Manchester Police to administer trauma care to one person rescued from the water, before they were passed into the care of North West Ambulance."
