A man and child have been killed following a mass stabbing in a German town this morning (January 22), with many more left injured.

Police have arrested a man after following the incident in the Bavarian town of Aschaffenburg at around 11.45am today. First responders have sectioned off a large portion of the city, covering Schöntal Park, where the attack is believed to have taken place.

Traffic in the area, has also been suspended. German national publication BILD, which has cited its own sources in reporting the death of the man and child, reports there are no other suspects in the case.

Police added there is not thought to be any danger to the public in a post on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

The local service said in a statement: "According to the current situation, a knife attack took place at around 11:45 a.m. in Schöntal Park, in which two people were fatally injured. The suspect was arrested in the immediate vicinity of the crime scene."

An eyewitness speaking to the Main-Echo claimed the suspect was taken away "in a headlock."

Another publication, NiUS, said he had attempted to escape arrest via railway tracks in Aschaffenburg, leading local authorities to suspend local rail and road traffic.

Railway operators said trains to and from Aschaffenburg are currently being held back, with unclear implications for regional and long-distance traffic.
