by Mikey Smith · The MirrorDavid Lammy has warned Vladimir Putin it would be "wrong" to impose conditions on a ceasefire with Ukraine.
Speaking from a meeting of G7 Foreign Ministers in Canada, Mr Lammy said the ceasefire was an "opportunity for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine."
Work towards an end to the conflict was the main subject of discussion at the meeting in Quebec.
Earlier in the week, military chiefs from Europe and beyond met in Paris to discuss plans for a peacekeeping force that could be deployed to Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire.
The meeting, also attended by US secretary of state Marco Rubio, came as Putin agreed to a ceasefire in principle.
But the Russian dictator said Russia would seek to "remove the root causes of the crisis" as part of any peace deal.
He did not specify what conditions he would seek - but it's been speculated he will try to undermine Ukraine's sovereignty and push for Volodomyr Zelensky to be ousted as the country's President.
"We have an opportunity for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine," Mr Lammy told the Mirror.
"The UK is stepping up to the mark and we're united with international partners. I am with the G7 in Canada this week, and the Prime Minister is convening international leaders on Saturday.
"The US and Ukraine have called for a full, immediate and unconditional 30-day ceasefire. This would be a first step so that talks can start on a full settlement that protects Ukraine's security and sovereignty. President Zelenskyy has shown that Ukraine is the party of peace.
"It would be wrong for Putin to lay conditions. Our support for Ukraine, and that of other partners, remains ironclad."
