Commissioner Selwyn Patterson was given some shocking news on Death In Paradise tonight.

The Commissioner has been a staple of the Saint Marie police force since the show began over a decade ago. Don Warrington has played the lovable Selwyn since the first Detective Inspector Richard Poole - played by Ben Miller - fronted the show.

However, tonight, Selwyn gets some surprise news as JP Hooper (Tobi Bakare) makes his welcome return to the island amid a tough case for the whole of the team. With the Commissioner sat drinking outside Catherine's bar, Sergeant Hooper - who now works with the Chief Commissioner in Jamaica, where the team is led from, had some surprise news.

As the Commissioner questioned why Sergeant Hooper wasn't at the airport, he admitted he had some bombshell news to reveal. He told him: "I wondered if I could have a chat with you. Have you got some time, sir? So, there are some things I found out about at the headquarters back in Jamaica. They loop me into these things, you know? I shouldn't really be saying anything, sir, but after everything you have done for me, I thought it would be wrong if I didn't."

The Commissioner seemed surprised by the news but let JP speak. He said: "They are looking to change some things here. Streamlining. And your position, Commissioner, they are going to dissolve it. I am so sorry, sir."

Fans will no doubt be fearful on whether this will mean an exit for the Commissioner, played by Don Warrington.

Nothing has been confirmed about his future on the show. Speaking about the storyline, and asked how he takes the bombshell, he said: "Not well. It’s shocking for him, and he does his best to get the superiors to change their decision and see things differently.

"It’s very interesting because we discover other aspects of Selwyn and that's always the joy about playing a character like him - there are so many different sides to him. You think you know about somebody but due to life events, you learn more about them. He’s opening up, he’s a bit like a flower coming in to bloom."

Selwyn is also having to grapple with the arrival of DI Mervin Wilson, played by Don Gilet. Speaking about his character's feelings towards the new arrival, he said: "He’s cagey and he’s watchful to see how he does. He’s not looking at traits but he’s looking at who Mervin really is. There’s a slight edge because Mervin has his way of doing things, and the team have theirs. But that changes when Selwyn begins to see there’s more to Mervin. He finds Mervin’s methods of working stressful, but he goes along with it up to a point until Mervin reaches that point and he sees another side of the Commissioner."
