Zohran Kwame Mamdani, a 34-year-old state lawmaker who is a democratic socialist and who has accused Israel of genocide against Palestinians during the war with Hamas in Gaza, was elected the city’s 111th mayor on Tuesday, according to The Associated Press.

Mamdani, who has been an outspoken critic of Israel, has faced backlash from some New York Jews, many of whom feel a strong connection to Israel. The debate over Mamdani’s sharp criticism of Israel coincides with surging antisemitic hate crimes in the city.

His victory, stretching from the gentrified corridors of Brooklyn to the working-class immigrant enclaves of Queens, completed one of the most remarkable political upsets in New York history and will soon put a democratic socialist in City Hall.

Mamdani becomes New York City’s first Muslim mayor, the first South Asian mayor and the youngest mayor in more than a century.

Voters turned out in record numbers on Tuesday for the 2025 New York City Mayoral Election, with polls closing at 9:00 PM.

This year’s race has drawn significant attention, with three major candidates on the ballot. Former Governor Andrew Cuomo is running as an Independent, seeking a return to public office. Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic socialist, has focused his campaign on housing and transportation reform. Curtis Sliwa, the Republican candidate and Guardian Angels founder, has emphasized public safety and policing as his key platform.

In the weeks leading up to Election Day, early voting numbers in New York City reached record highs, with over 200,000 ballots already cast across Brooklyn. Local officials have called it one of the highest early turnouts in a non-presidential election in city history.

President Donald Trump endorsed Cuomo on Monday night, and said that any Jewish person who votes for Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for New York City mayor, is “stupid.”

“Any Jewish person that votes for Zohran Mamdani, a proven and self professed JEW HATER, is a stupid person!!!” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

Mamdani, who has accused Israel of genocide against Palestinians during the war with Hamas in Gaza, has repeatedly pushed back on allegations that he’s antisemitic, a charge he said in June “pains me.”

“I’ve said at every opportunity that there is no room for antisemitism in this city, in this country. I’ve said that because that is something I personally believe,” he said.

In an NBC News exit poll, 56% of voters said the cost of living was the most important issue facing the city. Another 2 in 10 said crime was an important issue, while 10% said immigration.

Mamdani — who won a shocking victory in the Democratic primary earlier this year — has emphasized affordability issues and quality of life concerns for New Yorkers of all backgrounds. Many of these concerns are resonating with voters.

According to early results from the NBC News Exit Poll, 72% of mayoral voters said the cost of housing was a major problem — including majorities of those who supported Mamdani, Sliwa or Cuomo in the race.

Just 16% of voters said they were “getting ahead” financially. About 6 in 10 say their family’s financial situation is holding steady, and nearly a quarter say they are falling behind.
