SIBU (Feb 6): Police have opened an investigation into the deaths of three children who were found drowned in a sewage pond behind Block M of the Sibu Jaya flats here.

Sibu police chief ACP Zulkifli Suhaili said the case was initiated shortly after police received a report on the incident at about 4pm on Saturday.

He said the case has been classified as a Sudden Death Report (SDR) and is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001.

“Preliminary findings indicate that there are no elements of criminal offence involved. Investigations are ongoing to determine the actual cause of the incident,” he said in a media statement on Friday.

Zulkifli stressed that police are conducting a comprehensive investigation in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOP), including gathering relevant information, recording statements from witnesses and examining all aspects related to the case.

He also urged members of the public to refrain from spreading unverified information or making speculative assumptions that could interfere with the investigation.

“Anyone with information related to this incident is urged to come forward and assist the investigation by contacting the nearest police station,” he added.
