PDP hopes Mordi’s deputy minister role brings more devt to rural Sarawak

KUCHING (Dec 17): Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) deputy president Datuk Henry Harry Jinep has expressed hope that the appointment of Mas Gading MP Mordi Bimol as Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports will translate into more tangible development for rural areas, particularly in the Bidayuh heartland.

When contacted on Tuesday, Henry noted that the appointment was not unprecedented, pointing out that there had previously been a deputy minister from Pakatan Harapan (PH) representing the Puncak Borneo constituency.

He was referring to Puncak Borneo MP Datuk Willie Mongin, who served as Deputy Minister of Plantations and Commodities II from 2020 to 2022.

Willie is now a member of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), the lynchpin component of the state ruling Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).

Henry said: “What we want and hope for is that more development will be brought to the rural areas, which would benefit the people at large.”

Henry, state Minister of Transport cum Tasik Biru assemblyman, added that Mordi had been vocal in raising various issues in Parliament.

Mordi’s new role would provide him with a stronger platform and better access to government agencies to address long-standing concerns, he said.

“He has raised many issues before, and now as a deputy minister, with better access to all agencies, this can be an advantage in delivering what the people expect,” he said.

Congratulating Mordi on his appointment, Henry also expressed hope that priority would be given to development projects in Mas Gading, including proposals previously highlighted in Parliament such as the establishment of a sports academy complex and the upgrading of Bau Hospital.

He further urged the newly appointed deputy minister to pay close attention to social challenges affecting communities, particularly drug and substance abuse as well as online gambling.

“I wish him all the best in carrying out his duties, and may God bless him in this new responsibility,” Henry said.

Mordi is a leader of the Democratic Action Party (DAP), a partner in the federal Madani unity government but an opposition party at the state level in Sarawak.
