Sussexes’ Rep Says They Were “Surprised” King Charles’s Didn’t Tell Them About Letter in Advance, While Royal Sources Claim They Knew

The plot! has! thickened! In case you missed it due to enjoying the three-day weekend, King Charles dropped a lengthy letter on Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s surprising return to the United Kingdom. The top notes? He confirmed they aren’t returning as working royals, won’t be getting royal security, and will not be answering to “His and Her Royal Highness.”

And apparently Meghan and Harry had no idea this letter (which was made public after being sent to senior government officials) was incoming. An official spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex tells the BBC they “were a little surprised not to have been told about this in advance.”

However, the BBC also notes that “royal sources say Harry and Meghan were made aware of the letter before it was made public.”

In other words, Meghan and Harry have only been back in England for a few weeks and they’re already clashing with the royal family.

You can read Charles’s full letter over this way, but in it he writes, “there is no change to the current status of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex” and “Their styles as His and Her Royal Highness remain in abeyance and are not used.” He also reiterates that “The charitable work of the Duke and Duchess is a personal matter for them both and undertaken in their private capacity. In short, their position is akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.”

He also makes sure to note that “Any operational security issues should continue to be directed to the relevant Police authorities.”
