  • Disgraced royal Prince Andrew is no longer using his "Duke of York" title, news which was announced last week.
  • Now that Andrew isn't "Duke of York," there's a misconception that the title is seemingly "up for grabs."
  • Keep reading to find out what will happen to Andrew's title, and why his statement is "largely symbolic."

King Charles' disgraced brother Prince Andrew is no longer going by "Duke of York, news which was announced on Friday via a statement from Andrew himself:

"In discussion with The King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family," he said. "I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first. I stand by my decision five years ago to stand back from public life. With His Majesty’s agreement, we feel I must now go a step further. I will therefore no longer use my title or the honors which have been conferred upon me. As I have said previously, I vigorously deny the accusations against me."

So...what's happening to Andrew's Duke of York title? Royal expert Sharon Carpenter tells E! News, "It’s possible that in the future someone may be granted Andrew’s now former titles. But under current rules, a dukedom follows male-line succession. Andrew doesn’t have a son and it won’t be passed to his daughters. It would likely revert to the Crown when he dies and at that point the monarch could regrant the title to someone else."

Carpenter also notes that the removal of Andrew's title is "largely symbolic" since "removing his dukedom officially would legally require an act of Parliament and would be more complex than this immediate action. For Andrew to be legally stripped of his dukedom before his death, it would require statutory action—a vote by Parliament."

While there's clearly a lot of formality involved with title stripping, Prince William reportedly plans to take things several steps further and legally remove Prince/Princess titles from several members of his family. More on that below.
