BJP candidate list 2026: Party releases first list for Tamil Nadu election; Annamalai omitted

The BJP has released its first list of 22 candidates for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. While heavyweights L. Murugan and Tamilisai Soundararajan are set to contest, state leader K. Annamalai is a notable omission amid rumors of a Coimbatore North deadlock.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched its campaign for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections on Friday by announcing the names of its first batch of candidates. After considerable discussions within the BJP’s New Delhi office, the candidate list includes some well-known names, but has also left out some notable candidates.

Missing K. Annamalai from the candidate list: Deadlock expected over Coimbatore north

K. Annamalai, a former Indian Police Service officer and a significant BJP leader in Tamil Nadu, was widely assumed to be the face of the BJP's 2026 campaign. He is currently absent from the first round of candidates.

Speculation about the reason for Annamalai's absence centers on a potential impasse over the Coimbatore North constituency. Annamalai was expected to be the BJP's candidate for Coimbatore North, but the party has opted to renominate Vanathi Srinivasan for that seat, signalling turbulence within the party.

Two stars to head up the campaigns: L. Murugan and Tamilisai Soundararajan

The BJP is betting on its two biggest stars to run its campaign in the most contested areas of Tamil Nadu.

Executive Secretary L. Murugan will run from Avinashi (SC) for the party, while Tamilisai Soundararajan, the ex-government official in Telangana and Puducherry, will contest from Mylapore in Chennai, both of which provide a launching point for showcasing their ability to govern effectively and project a high degree of stature nationally to the voters of Tamil Nadu.

The broad geographic profile of the candidates includes the industrial section of the western districts and the south. Notable candidates include Sattur’s Nainar Nagenthran, who previously ran unsuccessfully against Vaniammal for the Vellore North seat, and Madurai South’s Prof. Raama Sreenivasan.

The representation of candidates in reserved seats for SCs is a very important focus, including Dr S.D. Premkumar from Rasipuram and Shri Pon V. Balaganapathy from Manamadurai.
