US President Donald Trump said he agreed to suspend attacks on Iran by two weeks and was ready for a ceasefire in the war if Iran completely reopens the vital Strait of Hormuz.

"I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks," Mr Trump posted on social media a little more than an hour before his deadline, after talks with Pakistani mediators

The US President had earlier warned Iran that "a whole civilization will die tonight" if his demands were not met.

Mr Trump said the deal was subject to ‌Iran's agreement to pause its blockade of oil and gas supplies through the strait, which typically handles about one-fifth of global oil shipments.

"This will ‌be a double sided CEASEFIRE!" Mr Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

"The ‌reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive agreement concerning long-term PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East," he said.

He added that Iran had presented a ten-point proposal that was a "workable basis" for negotiations and that he expected an agreement to be "finalised and consummated" during the two-week ceasefire.

Meanwhile, US broadcaster CNN reported that the White House said Israel has also agreed to a temporary ceasefire.

It comes as the Israeli military reported that Iran had fired missiles toward it, moments after Mr Trump's announcement.

"The (Israeli army) identified missiles launched from Iran toward the territory of the State of Israel. Defensive systems are operating to intercept the threat," the military said on its official Telegram channel.
