A man aged in his 30s has been arrested after a fatal hit-and-run on the northside of Limerick city this afternoon.

A pedestrian, aged in his 50s, was fatally injured after he was struck by a maroon coloured Ford Focus Cork registered car, which failed to remain at the scene.

This road traffic collision occurred on the Ennis road on the Northside of Limerick city, which is the busy route out of the city into Co Clare.

It occurred shortly before 2pm on a section of the road beside JFK junior school and the Holy Rosary church.

Gardaí said the man in his 30’s has been arrested and the car believed to be involved, has also been recovered.

The man is being detained and questioned at a garda station in the southern region.

The Ennis road from the junction at Union cross with Roses avenue, close to the Gaelic grounds, was closed from this afternoon to allow forensic collision investigators to examine the scene.
