Large policing operation under way for Trump visit

One of the biggest policing operations in the history of the State is under way for the visit of US President Donald Trump.

A number of protests are planned in Dublin and Clare, and significant travel restrictions are in place in both counties.

Mr Trump's visit begins in Dublin, and with that will come significant travel restrictions around Dublin Airport and Phoenix Park.

The airport is operating as normal, but those travelling to and from it should allow extra time for their journeys, due to restrictions on a number of roads around it, including the M50 between Junctions 3 and 6.

The peak impacts on this major route will be between 8am and 9am, and 12pm and 1pm

Just one plane-spotting site will be open, at 'The Mound’ on the Old Airport Road, however this will be open to pedestrians only.

In Dublin city centre, a large protest is due to march from Parnell Square to Government Buildings, which will result in rolling road closures there from 1pm.

From the afternoon, the focus then moves from the capital to Clare as Mr Trump will fly there for the Irish Open, which is taking place at his Trump International Golf Links & Hotel in Doonbeg.

Protests are also expected at Shannon Airport and in Doonbeg Village.

Shannon Airport will operate as normal but users should allow extra time. They are also advised to bring photo ID and valid flight documentation.

Access to Doonbeg village and the Trump International Hotel will also be severely restricted, except for locals.

Meanwhile, there will be airport-style security checks for those attending the Irish Open.

A temporary maritime exclusion zone and associated outer control area is in operation off the coast of Co Wicklow, while drone restrictions are in place in a number of areas.
