by · Wales Online

Good Morning Britain paused its scheduled programme as presenters Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley revealed a devastating event.

On the morning of Tuesday (October 22), the ITV presenters announced the tragic news of a deadly railway collision involving two trains in Wales. Richard, aged 68, verified that one individual had died and an additional 15 sustained injuries in the grievous mishap.

Susanna announced: "Good morning; it is eight o'clock, and breaking news this morning. A Large-scale emergency services operation, including fire and rescue and the coastguard, is underway in Wales following a rail collision involving two trains."

Richard added: "One man has died, and another 15 were injured when the Transport for Wales service to and from Shrewsbury crashed on a single track line last night."

The event occurred close to Llanbrynmair, situated on the route between Shrewsbury and Machynlleth, at approximately 7:30pm the previous evening (October 22).

A representative for British Transport Police informed that they were summoned to the vicinity of Llanbrynmair upon receiving detailed accounts of "a low-speed train collision involving two trains".

Multiple emergency service teams, including transport police, the Welsh ambulance crew, fire and rescue units, the coastguard, and representatives from railway companies, responded to the scene. National Rail announced disruptions due to the "operational incident", indicating potential cancellations or alterations to train schedules, reports the Express.

GMB reporter Katy Rickett pointed out that details surrounding the specifics of the incident remain notably sparse.

Providing firsthand knowledge, two witnesses described the traumatic occurrence, with one identifying the episode as "brutal" after observing a train decelerate sharply from an estimated speed of 50 mph.

An additional observer shared how the train conductor noticed a stationary train on the rails but could not bring his own train to a halt promptly, subsequently instructing passengers to "brace themselves" for the collision.

Katy remarked: "It sounds absolutely horrendous, and the worst part of this is that one man has died."

BTP Superintendent Andrew Morgan elaborated on the tragedy, stating: "We can sadly confirm a man has died following this evening's incident. We extend our deepest sympathies to his loved ones, alongside everyone else impacted, and specialist officers continue to provide support."

He further noted that the BTP is rigorously working with emergency services and the rail industry "to understand the circumstances leading up to this collision."

Andrew also mentioned that locals can anticipate seeing "an increased policing presence in the area in the coming days as a result."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
