The heartbroken family of a retired riding school instructor who was brutally murdered in her own home by a neighbour have said their lives "will never be the same". Wendy Buckney, 71, was the subject of an horrific attack in her Clydach home by 57-year-old Brian Whitelock in August 2022.

On Wednesday Whitelock, who previously killed two people including his own brother, was convicted of her murder. He will be sentenced on December 20 and faces a further life sentence. During his trial he said he expected to die in prison and would "deserve" to do so.

After the Swansea Crown Court trial concluded the family of Miss Buckney, who founded the well-loved Pen-Y-Fedw Riding Centre and Livery Yard, said in a statement: "Today’s verdict brings some measure of justice for Wendy who was taken from us far too soon. While nothing can bring her back we are grateful that the truth has been heard.

"Wendy was a very-much-loved sister and auntie whose kindness, laughter, and spirit touched the lives of so many. Our lives will never be the same without her but we will continue to honour her memory every day.

"This has been a painful and heartbreaking journey for our family. We thank everyone who has supported us during this incredibly difficult time and we ask for privacy as we continue to grieve and heal in the wake of this tragedy

"We would also like to thank the prosecution team who worked tirelessly to bring the truth to light. Their dedication and commitment has helped us during this incredibly difficult time."
