The BBC has confirmed that it will be screening a brand new six-part crime drama starring Hinterland favourite Richard Harrington.

The One That Got Away, filmed and set in Pembroke Dock, stars Harrington as DS Rick Walters who teams up with his ex-lover DI Ffion Lloyd, played by Elen Rhys, to find out who is responsible for murdering a nurse in a Welsh coastal town.

The murder opens old wounds in a small-town community, throwing a historic conviction into doubt and raising the horrifying prospect of a copycat killer. It is a forensic examination of a town, a killer, and a relationship, past and present.

Written by Catherine Tregenna, whose credits include Law & Order UK, Lewis and DCI Banks, The One That Got Away is the English language version of Welsh-language drama Cleddau, an original series for Welsh language broadcaster S4C.

"The One That Got Away is a deliciously dark and atmospheric thriller – sure to keep BBC viewers gripped to the very end," said Sue Deeks, Head of BBC Programme Acquisition.

It comes a decade after Harrington wowed audiences in the TV thriller Hinterland, which was screened in both Welsh (as Y Gwyll) and English and was hailed by critics as 'gritty' with The Guardian describing it as "Nordic noir done the Welsh way."

The review said: "If there is a more darkly brooding detective on TV at the moment, I've yet to meet him. DCI Tom Mathias, as played by Richard Harrington in this set of four films about a new cop reluctantly arrived in Aberystwyth, makes Kurt Wallander (fictional Swedish detective) look positively cheerful.

"The series certainly doesn't wear its Scandinavian inspiration lightly: there are wide shots of steely skies above remote houses and the sea beyond, and stories that refuse to be hurried, finding menace and sadness at every turn. Mathias even drives a Volvo."

The One That Got Away will be screened on BBC Four, BBC Wales and BBC iPlayer and is produced by BlackLight TV and supported by Welsh Government via Creative Wales. A broadcast date is to be announced.
