Multiple people fall ill after 'suspicious package' opened at Joint Base Andrews
by Darryl Coote · UPINov. 7 (UPI) -- Multiple people at Joint Base Andrews have fallen ill after "a suspicious package" sent to the military facility was opened, according to reports.
The package was sent to the Maryland base on Thursday, a spokesperson confirmed to Axios as well as CNN, which was the first to report on the incident.
"As a precaution, the building and connecting building were evacuated and a cordon was established around the area," according to a statement, as reported by CNN.
"Joint Base Andrews first responders were dispatched to the scene, determined there were no immediate threats and have turned the scene over to Office of Special Investigations. An investigation is currently ongoing."
Matt Ebarb, a spokesperson for the 316th Wing of the U.S. Air Force at the base, told Axios in an emailed statement that "multiple" individuals fell ill.
"They were evaluated and treated by JBA medical personnel, determined to be in stable condition and released today," Ebarb said.
According to authorities, there are no immediate threats and normal operations at the facility have resumed.
