Jair Bolsonaro hospitalized again in Brazil after coup conviction
by Mike Heuer · UPISept. 16 (UPI) -- Former Brazilian President Jair has entered the hospital a second time since Brazil's Supreme Court on Thursday convicted him of attempting a coup in 2023.
The court sentenced Bolsonaro to 27 years and three months in prison, but and he entered the hospital with skin lesions caused by an iron deficiency on Sunday, the Independent reported.
Bolsonaro went to the same hospital on Tuesday so he could be treated for a "severe bout of hiccups, vomiting and low blood pressure," his son Sen. Flavio Bolsonaro said in a social media post, as reported by the Independent.
The former president is being treated with intravenous fluids and after undergoing medical tests, his wife, Michelle Bolsonaro, said on social media, CNN reported.
"Everything will be all right!" she posted on her Instagram account.
Bolsonaro, 70, was Brazil's president from 2018 through 2022 but lost the presidential election to current President Luiz Inacio Lula daSilva.
Federal prosecutors accused him of plotting a coup against da Silva following his election loss, which included a possible assassination attempt.
Bolsonaro was placed under house arrest in August after he didn't follow court-ordered restrictions during his trial.
Prosecutors charged Bolsonaro after his supporters stormed the government buildings on Jan. 8, 2023.
The Brazilian Congress might approve an amnesty bill that would eliminate the conviction, which would enable Bolsonaro to run for president in 2026.
He was a paratrooper prior to winning the 2018 presidential election.
