House Dems: Ghislaine Maxwell plans to ask for commutation from Trump

Nov. 10 (UPI) -- Ghislaine Maxwell is planning to ask President Donald Trump for a commutation for her sex trafficking conviction related to the late Jeffrey Epstein, House Democrats said Monday.

Rep. Jamie Raskin, the ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, sent a letter to Trump on Sunday seeking information about a commutation application Maxwell is allegedly preparing. Democrats on the committee said a whistleblower showed them evidence of the application, which CBS News also viewed.

The letter to Trump said that the application was "undoubtedly coming to you for your direct consideration."

"The warden herself is directly helping Ms. Maxwell copy, print and send documents related to this application."

According to the letter, signed by Raskin, the whistleblower's information shows "either that Ms. Maxwell herself is requesting you release her from her 20-year prison sentence for her role as a co-conspirator in Jeffrey Epstein's international child sex trafficking ring, or that this child sex predator now holds such tremendous sway in the second Trump administration that you and your [Department of Justice] will follow her clemency recommendations."

Raskin called on Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche to testify before the Judiciary Committee to "answer for this corrupt misuse of law enforcement resources and potential exchange of favors for false testimony exonerating you and other Epstein accomplices."

House Democrats have sought to order the release of the so-called Epstein files -- a list of Epstein's wealthy clients, including, some believe, Trump. The president has called the existence of such a list a "Democratic hoax."

Last month, the Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal by Maxwell, who said she could have been legally immune after a 2007 agreement made between Epstein and Florida prosecutors.
