Trump says Iran's response to U.S. peace proposal is 'unacceptable'

May 10 (UPI) -- U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday brusquely rejected Iran's response to a proposed peace plan as "totally unacceptable," once again dampening hopes that an end to the war was within sight.

Writing on his Truth Social platform, Trump flatly rejected an Iranian offer transmitted via Pakistani negotiators earlier in the day.

"I have just read the response from Iran's so-called 'Representatives,'" he wrote. "I don't like it -- TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!"

Iran had communicated its response to the proposed U.S. short-term agreement earlier Sunday through a mediator, state media reported.

The Islamic Republic News Agency said Iran's response has been sent through Pakistan, which has mediated talks between Iran and the United States. IRNA did not share details about what the response was.

"According to the proposed plan, negotiations at this stage will focus on the issue of ending the war in the region," IRNA said.

The war has centered on the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, with U.S. and Iranian forces continuing to exchange fire in the Persian Gulf region as recently as Saturday in spite of a fragile cease-fire.

"We will never bow our heads before the enemy, and if talk of dialogue or negotiation arises, it does not mean surrender or retreat," Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian posted on social media Sunday. "Rather, the goal is to uphold the rights of the Iranian nation and to defend national interests with resolute strength."

Mike Waltz, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said on Fox News on Sunday that he expects President Donald Trump to remain firm that Iran must abandon its nuclear program.

"We'll see what the Iranians just came back with overnight in terms of their response to our very clear red line," Waltz said.
