The shooting occurred shortly after 2 p.m. EDT in North Codorus Township and involved four officers with the Northern York Regional Police Department, and the fifth was a York County sheriff's deputy, according to WCAU.
"There are simply no words I can offer to assuage the grief that this community has experienced," Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Col. Christopher Paris said, as reported by NBC News.
A witness saw the shooting unfold as he was driving home and stopped to allow police to go past his vehicle.
"I looked over to the right, of course, and I saw the police in the barn," Dave Miller told an NBC News affiliate.
"It looked like they were looking for someone," Miller said. "And then I heard the gunshots ring, and I saw people on the ground."
He said he saw a police officer on the ground and estimated about 30 shots were fired in rapid succession.
The shooting occurred at a small farm on Haar Road in SpringGrove, which is an agricultural community, CNN reported.
Officials at the Spring Grove Area School District issued a shelter-in-place order immediately following the shooting but lifted it soon after, The Inquirer reported.
Local authorities had advised school officials to keep students and staff inside their buildings while several area roads were closed.
The school district lifted the shelter-in-place order after 4 p.m.
