Good Morning Britain presenters Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley interrupted the show's normal broadcast to report on a major incident that occurred on Tuesday (October 22).

The heartbreaking announcement came from the ITV hosts as they reported on a tragic rail incident in Wales. Richard, who is 68, confirmed the death of one person and injuries to 15 others in the catastrophic event.

Susanna declared: "Good morning; it is eight o'clock, and breaking news this morning. A Large-scale emergency services operation, including fire and rescue and the coastguard, is underway in Wales following a rail collision involving two trains."

Richard added: "One man has died, and another 15 were injured when the Transport for Wales service to and from Shrewsbury crashed on a single track line last night."

The incident took place near Llanbrynmair on the route between Shrewsbury and Machynlleth at about 7:30pm on Monday night (October 22).

A spokesperson from British Transport Police reported that they were called to the area close to Llanbrynmair after receiving reports of "a low-speed train collision involving two trains".

After what National Rail described as an "operational incident," a flurry of emergency services, including transport police, ambulance crews, fire and rescue, the coastguard, and railway company officials, descended on the scene. Train schedules were thrown into disarray amid warnings of potential cancellations or changes, the Express reports.

Speaking to GMB, Katy Rickett noted that specifics of the incident are still hard to come by.

Two eyewitnesses recounted the shocking event; one spoke of the harsh reality after seeing a train slam on the brakes from roughly 50 mph, characterising the episode as "brutal".

Another witness told how the driver, spotting a stationary train up ahead, struggled to stop in time, leading him to urgently tell the passengers to "brace themselves" just before the impact.

Katy remarked: "It sounds absolutely horrendous, and the worst part of this is that one man has died."

BTP Superintendent Andrew Morgan elaborated on the tragedy, stating: "We can sadly confirm a man has died following this evening's incident. We extend our deepest sympathies to his loved ones, alongside everyone else impacted, and specialist officers continue to provide support."

He further noted that the BTP is rigorously working with emergency services and the rail industry "to understand the circumstances leading up to this collision."

Andrew also mentioned that locals can anticipate seeing "an increased policing presence in the area in the coming days as a result."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
