Lucy Letby questioned over more baby deaths as police issue statement

by · Birmingham Live

Lucy Letby has been interrogated by police regarding additional baby deaths at two hospitals where she was employed. The 34 year old former neonatal nurse was questioned in prison about the deaths of infants at the Countess of Chester Hospital, where she was found guilty of murdering seven babies.

She is also being investigated for more cases at Liverpool Women’s Hospital, where she trained as a student. This is reportedly the first time Letby has been interviewed by police concerning deaths at the Liverpool hospital.

Currently, she is serving 15 whole-life sentences for murdering seven babies and attempting to kill seven more during a 13-month killing spree at the Chester hospital. Police interviewed her at HMP Bronzefield, a category A women's prison in Ashford, Surrey.

Cheshire Police issued a statement confirming the latest developments in the case. It read: "We can confirm that, following agreement, Lucy Letby has recently been interviewed in prison under caution in relation to the ongoing investigation into baby deaths and non-fatal collapses at the Countess of Chester Hospital and the Liverpool Women’s Hospital. Further updates will follow at the appropriate time."

Following her initial conviction at Manchester Crown Court last August, Cheshire Police began reviewing all 4,000 babies she cared for during her tenure at both hospitals, dating back to January 2012. In October, Letby was denied permission to appeal against her latest conviction for attempting to murder a premature baby girl.

Despite trying to gain approval to challenge her most recent conviction in July for the attempted murder of another baby girl following a retrial, three senior judges at the Court of Appeal refused to grant her permission to appeal.
