'Man and child killed' in horror Germany mass stabbing

A man and a child have reportedly been killed in a horror mass stabbing in Germany. Several people are understood to also be injured following the incident earlier today (Wednesday, January 22).

Police are believed to have arrested a man in connection with the alleged stabbings. The perpetrator is said to have descended on members of the public in the Bavarian town of Aschaffenburg, killing two and injuring others at about 11.45am.

Emergency services have sealed off a large section of the city, covering Schöntal Park - where the attack is believed to have taken place. Traffic in the area has been brought to a halt.

German national publication BILD said a man and child had been killed, Mirror reports. It also reported that there are no other suspects in the case.

On social media platform X, formerly Twitter, police said there is not thought to be any danger to the public. The local service said in a statement: "According to the current situation, a knife attack took place at around 11:45 a.m. in Schöntal Park, in which two people were fatally injured.

"The suspect was arrested in the immediate vicinity of the crime scene." An eyewitness speaking to the Main-Echo said the suspect was taken away 'in a headlock'.

Publication, NiUS said he had attempted to escape arrest via railway tracks in Aschaffenburg This prompted local authorities to suspend local rail and road traffic.

Railway operators said trains to and from Aschaffenburg are currently being held back. Schöntal Park was previously classified as a 'dangerous place' by local officials following a series of crimes in the area.

This included a robbery and assault. In October 2024, police carried out a major drug raid which saw officers search about 20 people who had gathered at the park .

They identified two suspected drug dealers and confiscated drugs. The frequent criminality has led police to step up patrols in the area.
