Second man dies in Storm Bert as 'tree crushes Mercedes E350'

A man in his 60s is thought to be the second person to die during Storm Bert. Police said the man was behind the wheel of a black Mercedes E350 when a tree fell onto the vehicle.

Emergency services were dispatched to the scene on the A34 near Winchester, Hampshire, but the man could not be saved. It comes after a 34-year-old man died when his car 'spun' and he hit a wall in Yorkshire the early hours of Saturday.

He is believed to be the first person to have died due to Storm Bert. There has been wide disruption across the UK due to the ongoing storm.

Hampshire Police said: "We are appealing for witnesses and dash cam footage after a fatal incident on the A34 this morning (Saturday, November 23). "Police were called at 7.47am to a report that a tree had fallen on a car on the A34 southbound carriageway, between Kings Worthy and Winnall.

"A driver of a black Mercedes E350 - a man in his 60s - was confirmed deceased at the scene. His family have been informed by our officers.

"A silver Skoda Kodiaq was also damaged but no other injuries were reported. Lengthy lane closures have been in place while emergency services work at the scene and we want to thank motorists for their patience.
