Michelle Obama reveals she and Barack planned to meet Rob Reiner and his wife the night they were murdered
· GOSS.ieBarack and Michelle Obama had planned to meet with Rob Reiner and his wife Michele on the night they were brutally murdered.
The couple were found stabbed to death inside their Los Angeles home on Sunday night, and their son Nick has since been arrested on suspicion of their murder.
Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Monday night, the former First Lady reacted to the news of their shock deaths.
“We’ve known them for many, many years and we were supposed to be seeing them that night – last night – and we got the news,” Michelle said.
Hitting out at Donald Trump over his shock comments about Rob’s death, she continued: “Let me just say this, unlike some people, Rob and Michele Reiner are some of the most decent, courageous people you ever want to know.
“They’re not deranged or crazed. What they have always been are passionate people in a time when there’s not a lot of courage going on. They’re the kind of people who were ready to put their actions behind what they cared about.”
“And they cared about their family, and they cared about this country, and they cared about fairness and equity – and that is the truth,” she added.
After their murder hit headlines, Trump caused outrage after he linked their deaths to their personal dislike of him.
During Trump’s first term, Rob repeatedly described the president as “mentally unfit” and “unqualified” to serve in office.
In a social media post on Monday, Trump referred to Reiner as “tortured and struggling” and said he and his wife had passed away, “reportedly due to the anger he caused” by opposing Trump as president.
“He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession with President Donald J. Trump,” the president wrote on Truth Social.
His post sparked widespread criticism online from both Democratic and Republican politicians.
Those in Hollywood also condemned his comments, with Patrick Schwarzenegger writing on X: “What a disgusting and vile statement.”
Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner as her friend and “quite an amazing man,” condemned Trump.
She said: “I don’t understand the man in the White House. He spoke at length about Charlie Kirk and about caring, and then this is what he puts out. Have you no shame? No shame at all? Can you get any lower? I don’t think so.”
Rob, 78, and Michele, 70, were found dead by their daughter Romy at their $13.5 million Brentwood mansion on Sunday.
Their son Nick, 32, has since been booked for murder and is being held on $4m bail (about €3.4m).
According to TMZ, Rob and Nick Reiner got into a fight on Saturday night at a party at Conan O’Brien’s house, and many people saw Nick behaving strangely.
Sources close to the family also told the outlet that Nick Reiner, who had battled addiction for years, was living in a guesthouse on his parents’ land and that his mother had grown more worried about his mental health in recent weeks.
In a statement confirming the sad deaths of Rob and his wife Michele, a spokesperson for the family said: “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”
The Los Angeles Police Department’s deputy chief, Alan Hamilton, stated at a news conference on Sunday night that the department was conducting a “death investigation” but would not provide any details on the fatalities until the L.A. County coroner did.
