Donald Trump claims Sean 'Diddy' Combs 'asked him for a pardon' in letter
· GOSS.ieDonald Trump has claimed Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs asked him to pardon his prison sentence.
In an exclusive report by The New York Times, the outlet reported that the US president is not considering clemency for the disgraced hip-hop star.
Trump told reporters that Combs “asked me for a pardon,” adding that the request came “through a letter.”
The 56-year-old was was convicted on two prostitution-related charges last July, and sentenced to 50 months in jail in October.
During a press briefing last May, Trump was asked if he would consider granting Combs a pardon.
“I haven’t seen him, I haven’t spoken to him for years,” he said at the time.
“I don’t know. I would certainly look at the facts. If I think somebody was mistreated it wouldn’t matter whether they like me or don’t.”
The reporter noted that Trump once referred to Diddy as a friend in 2012.
Trump stated that Combs “used to really like me a lot” but “that relationship busted up” when he ran for president in 2016.
The 79-year-old alleged Combs made “nasty statements” about him at the time.
“I know they’re thinking about it,” Trump said of Diddy’s team asking him for a pardon. “I think people have been very close to asking.”
Combs is scheduled to serve approximately three years in jail, after receiving credit for time served.
His legal team has been pursuing an appeal, and last month asked a federal appeals court in New York to order his immediate release from prison.
His release date is currently set for May 25, 2028, according to Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate records.
