What did Jimmy Kimmel say? See comments that led to ABC pulling show
The late-night host's comments about the suspect in Charlie Kirk's killing during his Monday monologue led to "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" being pre-empted indefinitely by ABC.
by Mike Gavin · 5 NBCDFW“Jimmy Kimmel Live!” has been pulled off the air indefinitely by Disney’s ABC following the late-night host’s comments about the suspect in Charlie Kirk’s assassination.
Kimmel, during his opening monologue on Monday’s show, suggested that Tyler Robinson, who was accused of fatally shooting the conservative activist, was a supporter of President Donald Trump and his Make America Great Again movement.
What did Jimmy Kimmel say?
“We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them, and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” Kimmel said during his monologue. “And in between the finger pointing, there was grieving on Friday. The White House flew the flags at half-staff, which got some criticism, but on a human level you can see how hard the president is taking this.”
Kimmel then cut to a video of a reporter outside the White House offering Trump his condolences about Kirk and asking how the president has been holding up.
“I think very good,” Trump said. “And, by the way, right there you see all the trucks. They just started construction of the new ballroom for the White House, which is something they’ve been trying to get, as you know, for about 150 years. And it’s going to be a beauty.”
Kimmel then returned on screen and reacted to Trump’s response.
“Yes, he’s at the fourth stage of grief: construction,” Kimmel said. “Demolition, construction. This is not how an adult grieves the murder of someone he called a friend. This is how a 4-year-old mourns a goldfish, OK?”
On Wednesday, Federal Communications Commission chair Brendan Carr threatened to “take action” against Disney and ABC over the comments.
An ABC spokesman told NBC News later on Wednesday that ″‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ will be "pre-empted indefinitely.”
How long has Jimmy Kimmel been on?
