Met Office issues weather warning as snow forecast to fall overnight in Derbyshire

by · Derbyshire Live

Derbyshire could be hit by snow overnight from Monday evening (November 18), causing some disruption across the county. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for snow and ice, which comes into operation from 7pm tonight (Monday) through to 10am tomorrow (Tuesday, November 19).

Initially, the evening will start wet across most areas of the county and this will gradually turn the sleet and then snow as the temperature drops around midnight. It is likely that it will continue snowing overnight especially on hills, with five to 10 cms possible above 200 metres. At higher levels - above 300 metres - this could be as much as 15 to 20cms.

The Met Office warning also said: "There is a small chance of snow settling at lower levels, where five to 10 cm would prove much more disruptive, but this remains very uncertain. As rain, sleet and snow clear on Tuesday morning, ice may form on untreated surfaces."

Temperatures during Monday will remain cold at around 4 C, dropping to 1C in the centre of Derby overnight, and -1C in other areas of the county.

The expected swathe of snow covers an area from the Scottish border down to south Derbyshire, and includes Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a cold health alert covering the Midlands and North of England for much of the coming week - from now until 9am on Thursday.

It states that weather conditions are likely to have minor impacts on health and social care services, including increased use of healthcare services and a greater risk to life of vulnerable people.

Cold and frosty nights will continue for most of this week with daytime temperatures of only 3 to 8C and temperatures as low as -5C in parts of the county. There could be further snow by Thursday before temperatures turn milder once more over the coming weekend.

Advice from the Met Office said: "Snowy, wintry weather can cause delays and make driving conditions dangerous, so to keep yourself and others safe: plan your route, checking for delays and road closures, amending your travel plans if necessary; if driving, leave more time to prepare and check your car before setting off; make sure you have essentials packed in your car in the event of any delays (warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, a torch, ice scraper/de-icer, a warning triangle, high visibility vest and an in-car phone charger).
