BRUSSELS >> The European Union faced calls on Sunday to implement a never-before-used range of economic counter-measures known as the “Anti-Coercion Instrument” as part of the bloc’s response to President Donald Trump’s tariff threats against European allies over Greenland.

Europe’s dependence on the United States for NATO security limits its options. Its strongest response would be a trade “bazooka,” and other options are possible.

The eight countries threatened with tariffs by the US President said they “stand in full solidarity” with the people of Greenland and Denmark.

Hours after US President Donald Trump announced plans to impose 10% tariffs on Denmark and several other European Union countries over the Greenland dispute, the European bloc reacted strongly, warning that such moves could lead to a dangerous escalation and seriously damage the transatlantic partnership.
