Quick-moving brush fires burned through a large swath of land on New York's Long Island on Saturday, fanned by high winds that spewed thick gray smoke into the sky and prompted the evacuation of a military base and the closure of a major highway.

Weeks after the California fire, the Long Island fires damaged a structure near Francis S. Gabreski Airport, prompting the evacuation of personnel as a precautionary measure around 1:45 pm.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency on Saturday as crews battled brush fires on Long Island. She said 100,000 N95 masks will be sent to the impacted area.

Governor Hochul said emergency workers were responding to the fires around the Pine Barrens, a wooded area that is home to commuter towns east of New York City.

Several wildfires have set the Hamptons ablaze as residents are forced to evacuate the area.
